Afghan Girl’s Journey to Identity (2024)

A young Afghan woman born in Iran, denied citizenship and identity, embarks on a life-changing journey to Afghanistan, searching for her identity, until the Taliban returns to power…

“Afghan Girl’s Journey to Identity” is a compelling documentary that follows the life of a young Afghan woman born in Iran but denied an official identity. Iranian laws prevent children of non-Iranian parents from obtaining citizenship, leaving her stateless and without basic rights in the only country she has ever known. At 30, she makes the bold decision to return to Afghanistan, a land she has never seen, in search of belonging and recognition.

Her journey unfolds during Afghanistan’s final days as a republic. Just as she begins navigating her path toward identity, the Taliban seizes power, throwing the nation into chaos and uncertainty. The film captures her emotional struggle as she confronts personal challenges against a backdrop of political upheaval and societal transformation.

More than a personal story, the documentary offers a striking portrait of Afghanistan’s social fabric, touching on ethnic divides, cultural richness, and the struggles faced by its women. Through themes of identity, displacement, and resilience, it invites viewers to reflect on the meaning of belonging and the human spirit’s strength in overcoming adversity.

Director's Statement:

reating Afghan Girl’s Journey to Identity was an intense experience, made more challenging by the shifting political landscape in Afghanistan. Filming during the Taliban’s return to power added a layer of complexity and urgency to the project. Amidst these difficulties, our goal remained clear: to capture an honest portrayal of Afghan culture and the resilience of its women, without interference or staging. This film is a testament to the courage of a young woman navigating her identity, set against the backdrop of a country in turmoil.
