Privilege [İmtiyaz] (2020)

Berkay, a 10-year-old boy, faces an inner struggle during his summer in the village when he learns Muhammad is the most beautiful name, challenging his attachment to worldly pleasures.

Berkay, a 10-year-old boy from a middle-class urban family, is sent to his ancestral village for the summer holidays while his parents remain in the city. Used to the comforts of urban life, Berkay begins to explore the slower, more traditional pace of village living. To fill his time, he is enrolled in a Qur’an course, where he is exposed to teachings and ideas that are unfamiliar to him.

One day during the course, the hodja answers a question, explaining that the most beautiful name is Muhammad. For Berkay, who has grown up indulging in life’s material pleasures and believing he deserves the best of everything, this revelation shakes his understanding of beauty, value, and status. The clash between the spiritual wisdom presented to him and his attachment to worldly desires becomes a source of inner conflict.

As the summer progresses, Berkay begins grappling with these opposing forces—his longing for material satisfaction and the spiritual truths he encounters at the Qur’an course. This journey forces him to confront his deeply ingrained beliefs about what truly holds value in life, leading him to question his priorities and seek a resolution to his growing inner turmoil.
